UL 1740: A Guide to Key Updates

The 4th Edition of UL 1740 is an important leap forward in requirements, aligning it with globally published robotics standard ISO 10218.

This update was essential because associated standards ANSI/RIA R15.06 and ISO 10218 had been previously updated to incorporate allowances for a risk/performance based approach to safety as opposed to a prescriptive based approach. In addition, updates made to NFPA 79 and other industrial standards over the past few years needed to be addressed.

While many of the changes to the UL 1740 standard are modest, there are a few important modifications that can potentially impact current and future certifications of robotic equipment. The purpose of this paper is to outline those changes, the potential impact and your responsibilities based on the update to the 4th Edition of UL 1740.
History of the Standard

  • 1995 - The 1st Edition of UL 1740 was published in February of 1995 as an end product test standard that would ensure the ability to install the equipment with National Electrical Requirements (NEC).
  • 1998 - The 2nd Edition was published in November of 1998 with the removal of the term “Industrial” from its title.
  • 2007 - The 3rd Edition of UL 1740 was published with modest changes in December 2007.
  • 2018 - The 4th Edition of UL 1740 was in the works for many years to modernize and harmonize it with other standards, before publication in January of 2018.
